7.07-carat Burmese Ruby Headlines The Bonhams HK May Auction

A magnificent collection of jewellery featuring exceptional gemstones 
spanning the decades from early 20th century to modern contemporary jewellery will be sold at Bonhams Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite sale on 28th May. 

Bonhams is presenting the highly anticipated auction dedicated to the world of fine
jewels end of May. Leading the sale is an important ruby and diamond ring featuring a rare  certified Burmese ruby. The rectangular cushion-shaped mixed-cut Burmese ruby weighs 7.07 carats making it a rarity in size as well as in colour, with one gemmological report stating ‘pigeons blood red’ designation and no enhancement. The ruby was reset in 2012 into its current mount of 18-karat white and yellow gold set with 8 oval diamonds, all of D colour, VVS1 to VS1 clarity, together weighing 6.01 carats, all certified by the GIA laboratory. The spectacular ring is offered with an estimate of HK$6,800,000 to 8,800,000.

There is a notable increase in demand for rubies in the marketplace, with the gemstone being highly sought after. We are excited to showcase some magnificent pieces in the forthcoming sale alongside many more jewels besides.”

Also on offer is an impressive ruby and diamond necklace, the suspended cushion-shaped unheated Burmese origin ruby weighing 23.45 carats is surrounded by oval and round brilliant-cut diamonds. The necklace is offered with an estimate of HK$6,000,000 to 8,000,000.

Another highlight is a pair of natural ruby and diamond pendant chandelier earrings of 22.52  carats. The earrings with suspended three fringes are set with round, oval and cushion-shaped rubies of Burmese origin and natural ‘pigeon blood red’ colour, embellished with cushion and round-brilliant-cut diamonds. Offered with an estimate of HK$2,500,000 to 3,500,000.

Also on offer is an exceptional ruby and diamond bracelet set with 15 oval and cushion- 
shaped rubies of 20.70 carats and natural, red colour and decorated with various shaped 
diamonds of 9.10 carats. The bracelet is offered with an estimate of HK$1,500,000  to 2,500,000. 

Among the other notable highlights is a significant double-strand diamond rivière necklace by J.E. Caldwell & Co., an American brand founded in 1868, who produced some of the finest examples of American Belle Époque and Art Nouveau jewellery. The articulated necklace dating from the first quarter of the twentieth century, is set with gradual old-European cut diamonds weighing approximately 153 carats, with centre stone 11.53 and 8.41 carats of J colour and VVS-VS clarities. Offered with an estimate of HK$12,000,000 to 16,000,000.

An important natural jadeite bangle of intense emerald-green colour evenly throughout, 
with thickness and translucency which is rare from jadeite material. The jadeite is 
authenticated as natural with no resin detected. Offered with an estimate of 
HK$7,500,000 to 10,000,000.

An exceptional unheated sapphire and diamond ring the cushion-shaped 17.61 carat 
natural sapphire is of Burmese origin and decorated with round brilliant-cut diamonds. The ring is offered with an estimate of HK$1,600,000-1,800,000.

A rare size Brazilian Cabochon Paraiba Tourmaline and diamond ring weighing 8.33 
carats, flanked by trilliant diamonds, offered with an estimate of HK$1,000,000 to 
1,800,000.
