BIS Pushes Hallmarking Adoption Through Industry Conclave & Jeweller Outreach in Tamil Nadu

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) intensified its hallmarking drive with a dual approach—industry-wide technical deliberations and grassroots jeweller engagement—through two programmes held in Tamil Nadu.

A Laboratory Conclave on assaying and hallmarking of gold and silver alloys, jewellery, and artefacts was organised at BIS’s Southern Regional Laboratory in Chennai. The event brought together key stakeholders to address challenges, share best practices, and explore future opportunities in the precious metals ecosystem.

Senior BIS officials stressed the importance of quality assurance, standardisation, and stronger collaboration across the value chain. Discussions covered regulatory developments, technical advancements, and the need to strengthen systems to meet evolving industry requirements. Around 100 assaying and hallmarking centres from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry participated, with the conclave conducted in hybrid mode to widen engagement.

Complementing this, BIS Chennai conducted a Jeweller Awareness Programme in Avadi for stakeholders in Thiruvallur district, where hallmarking is not yet mandatory. The initiative focused on educating jewellers on BIS standards, compliance processes, and digital tools for voluntary adoption.

Officials urged jewellers to adopt hallmarking proactively to build consumer trust and stay aligned with future regulatory requirements. Demonstrations included the e-BIS portal for online registration and the BIS Care App for product verification and grievance redressal. An interactive session addressed queries on HUID implementation, documentation, and coordination with hallmarking centres.

The twin initiatives reflect BIS’s strategy of combining policy dialogue with on-ground capacity building to deepen hallmarking penetration and strengthen transparency in the jewellery sector.
