CIBJO Releases Report on Greenwashing in Jewellery Marketing

As the 2024 CIBJO Congress approaches, the organisation has released its eighth pre-congress Special Report. This report, prepared by the CIBJO Ethics Commission, focuses on the issue of greenwashing in the jewellery industry.

Greenwashing, the practice of falsely portraying a product or company as environmentally friendly, is becoming increasingly prevalent. The report highlights the dangers of this deceptive marketing tactic, including undermining consumer trust and distorting competition.

Sara Yood, head of the CIBJO Ethics Commission, highlighted the importance of avoiding greenwashing. She warns that companies that make unsubstantiated environmental claims could face legal consequences, including fines and injunctions.

To combat greenwashing, the report offers six recommendations for the jewellery industry. These recommendations aim to clarify the appropriate use of environmental terminology in marketing campaigns and ensure the veracity of such claims.

By promoting universal definitions and stronger regulatory standards, CIBJO hopes to guide the industry towards a more sustainable and responsible future.
