Mr. Kirtilal Doshi, Former GJEPC & GII Chairman, And Pioneer Of Indian Gem & Jewellery Industry, Passes Away at 101

Mr. Kirtilal K. Doshi, the Former Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Promotion Council (GJEPC), Founding Chairman of the Gemmological Institute of India (GII), and a visionary leader of the Indian gem and jewellery industry, passed away peacefully in Mumbai on 20th November, 2023 at the age of 101.

Mr. Doshi was a man of many achievements and contributions to the growth and development of the Indian gem trade. He was the Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) from 1970 to 1971, during which time he played a key role in the establishment of GII, the first gemmological institute in the country. He was also instrumental in founding several other industry bodies, such as the Precious Stone Importers Association, Diamond Exporters Association Ltd. and Bharat Diamond Bourse.

Mr. Doshi was a respected and admired figure in the global gem community, known for his passion, integrity, innovation and foresight. He was honoured with several awards and recognitions, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award by the GJEPC in 2012 and the Chairman Emeritus of GII and Shrenuj & Co., his erstwhile family business.

Mr. Doshi was born in 1922 in Palanpur, Gujarat, and started his career in the diamond industry at a young age. He joined his father’s business in 1942 and soon expanded it into one of the leading diamond manufacturing and exporting companies in India. He was also a pioneer in introducing modern technology and equipment in the diamond cutting and polishing sector, as well as promoting ethical and responsible business practices.

Mr. Doshi is survived by his two sons, a daughter and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
