Jewelex has been at the forefront of CSR activities for more than fifty years, even before it was mandated by law. Reaching out to the needy communities and underprivileged sections of society is in the DNA of the Kothari family, which owns Jewelex. The company’s core values are integrity, care, innovation and excellence. Care is an integral part of the CSR philosophy. The company has focused on areas of education, healthcare and nutrition to bring about a socio-economic change in the lives of the less privileged sections of society.

Education – Supporting students in rural areas

Education is an important element in improving the overall economic and social scenario in any society. Especially in a developing country, like India, the importance of providing affordable education and vocational skills cannot be overstated. Under education, the priority of Jewelex’s CSR activities has been to support:

  • E-Learning for students in rural areas – more than hundred schools in Maharashtra and Gujarat have benefitted from this initiative.
  • Night schools for the urban poor – sponsored two night schools in Mumbai for the school drop-outs to rejoin the education system and enhance their employability chances.
  • Enhancing the overall learning ecosystem through upgradation of school infrastructure and value-added classes.

Healthcare – Reaching out to the economically disadvantaged people

Healthcare is one of the basic essentials to reduce the suffering in human life and thereby improve the quality of living. For the economically disadvantaged, there are NGOs which reach out to the populace in rural and urban areas or there are large public hospitals in cities, like Mumbai.

  • For preventive healthcare, Jewelex has permitted free use of its factory premises in Ahmedabad by a local NGO, Sanjivani Health & Relief Committee. The entire factory premises has also been transformed into a health and diagnostic facility through a generous contribution from the company. The facility is a blessing for those from the lower economic strata, as it provides various diagnostic tests at a highly subsidized rate.
  • For general healthcare, Jewelex has contributed for setting up wards/buildings for eye care hospitals, mother and child care units in rural areas of Gujarat. It has donated the latest equipment, such as laparoscope, sonography machines and blood analysers for cancer care, etc., to the large public hospitals in Mumbai. Jewelex also sponsored setting up of the ‘Human Milk Bank & Kangaroo Mother Care’ services at Nair Municipal Hospital, Mumbai.

Nourishing the society

Deficiencies in nutrition inflict long-term damage to both individuals and society. Nutrition-deficient or malnourished individuals are less productive in school or at work.

  • Providing free breakfast to the relatives of patients at K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai. Being one of the largest public hospitals in Mumbai, many low-income or poor patients from the city as well as rural areas come to the hospital to avail the services. Every day, since the last four years, almost 250 individuals take advantage of the free breakfast facility.
  • For school children, nutrition is important to not only grow physically and be in good health but also a hungry child cannot concentrate on studies. Hence, extranutrition in the form of a hot cereal or roasted millet or chikki or fruit is provided to supplement their requirements. Extra-nutrition is sponsored for more than 2,500 school children in Mumbai and Palanpur, through local NGO partners. This helps in improving children’s stamina and also has a bearing on their attendance in school.
